If you have recently been tasked with managing HPC clusters or want to expand your knowledge about them, especially about networking.

Those who have attended an LCI Introductory Workshop in the past are especially encouraged to attend!

NOTE: If you plan to submit an application for the Charlie Bender Scholarship, do NOT register for the workshop until after you have submitted your application, a decision has been made, and you have been notified. This will take place well in advance of the early registration deadline.

Workshop Location

  • Jerome L. Greene Science Center (JLG): 3227 Broadway, New York, NY 10027
  • Upon Arrival at the Jerome L. Greene Science Center (JLG):
    • Please approach the Public Safety desk and mention that you are here for the LCI Advanced Workshop.
    • Present your photo ID so the offi cers can verify your name on the guest list.
    • Once approved, proceed through the turnstiles and take the elevators to the 7th Floor.
    • The workshop will be held in conference room L7-119.

Preferred Hotels

  • Arthouse Hotel: 2178 Broadway, New York, NY 10024 (Upper West Side, at West 77th Street)
    • Note: This is our primary recommended hotel. Discounted rates may be available for workshop attendees.
  • George Manhattan, Tapestry Collection by Hilton: 412 W 126th St, Harlem, NY 10027 (at St. Nicholas Avenue)
    • Note: A discounted rate is not available for this property; however, it is a highly convenient option located just an 8-minute walk from the Jerome L. Greene Science Center (JLG) workshop location.

Transportation to/from the Arthouse Hotel

  • From Airports (via Taxi or Uber/Lyft):
    • LaGuardia Airport (LGA): Approximately 30–45 minutes.
    • JFK International Airport (JFK): Approximately 60–90 minutes.
    • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR): Approximately 45–60 minutes.
  • From Train Stations
    • Penn Station (Moynihan Train Hall):
      • Taxi/Uber/Lyft: Approximately 15–25 minutes.
      • Subway: Approximately 15-20 minutes.
        • Take the Uptown 1, 2, or 3 trains to 72nd Street. (Note: Only the 1 train continues to 79th Street).
    • Metro-North (Harlem–125th Street Station):
      • Taxi/Uber/Lyft: Approximately 15–20 minutes.
      • Subway: Approximately 20-25 minutes.
        • Take the Downtown A, B, C, or D trains to 59th St-Columbus Circle, then transfer to the Uptown 1 train to 79th Street.

Travel Between Arthouse Hotel and Jerome L. Greene Science Center (JLG)

  • Subway (Recommended): Approximately 10 minutes.
    • Take the Uptown 1 train from 79th St to 125th St. The JLG Science Center is a 2-minute walk from the station.
  • Bus: Approximately 20–25 minutes.
    • The M104 bus runs directly along Broadway. Board at W 77th St and exit at W 129th St.
  • Taxi/Uber/Lyft: Approximately 10–15 minutes.

Note on Transit Payment: For the subway and buses, you don’t need a special transit payment card. You can just tap any contactless credit card, debit card, or smartphone (Apple/Google Pay) at the turnstiles or bus boarding zones using the OMNY system.

Commuting from New Jersey and Long Island to the Jerome L. Greene Science Center (JLG)

  • From New Jersey
    • Via NJ Transit Trains (to Penn Station):
      • Subway: From Penn Station, take the Uptown 1 train directly to 125th Street (~20 minutes). The JLG Science Center is a 2-minute walk north of the station.
    • Via Port Authority Bus Terminal:
      • Subway:
        • Option 1 (Direct): Take the Uptown 1 train (local) from Times Square–42nd Street directly to 125th Street (~20 minutes).
        • Option 2 (Express Transfer): Take the Uptown 2 or 3 train (express) from Times Square to 96th Street, then cross the platform to transfer to the Uptown 1 train (local) to 125th Street (~15 minutes).
    • Via George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal:
      • Subway: Take the Downtown 1 train from 181st Street directly to 125th Street (~12 minutes).
  • From Long Island
    • Via Long Island Rail Road (LIRR to Penn Station):
      • Subway: From Penn Station, take the Uptown 1 train directly to 125th Street (~20 minutes). The JLG Science Center is a 2-minute walk north from the station.

Driving & Parking near Jerome L. Greene Science Center (JLG)

Driving is not recommended as the workshop organizers cannot provide or validate parking. If you do choose to drive, the following paid parking garages are located close to JLG:

  • MTP Uni. Facility Corp.: 635 West 131st Street
  • MTP Columbia Water Front LLC: 69 St. Clair Place (712 West 125th Street, beneath the Henry Hudson Parkway)
  • MTP Parking: 3270 Old Broadway, New York, NY 10027

Weather

Mid-October in NYC features crisp, comfortable autumn weather, with breezy days averaging around 65°F that quickly drop into the chilly 50s (10°C) after sunset.

Wi-Fi

Visitors can access free Wi-Fi by selecting the “Columbia University” unsecured wireless network. No password is required.
